About rust
It is rare that metal generally exists with the substance of only one kind of atom in nature. Most exists as some compounds (especially, sulfide, oxide, etc.) since it is the stable energy state. However, the metal used in our life are used a lot by separating oxygen, sulfur, etc. from the metal oxide and sulfide which exists in nature.
Examples of metal that is used very widely include iron (Fe). Iron is mined as an oxide of iron called "iron ore" in
nature. oxygen atom and impurities are removed by refining the iron ore, and iron of high purity is isolated. The refined iron is processed to various products. As I mentioned
before, When oxygen and moisture adhere to iron surface, the refined iron tend to return to the oxide because existing as oxide is better stable than existing as simple substance in
nature.
According to this phenomenon, the reddish-brown rust which you see well is generated. This phenomenon is the cause of generating rust which you see well.
For preventing the rust
In order to prevent rust, it is important to insulate with something so that oxygen and moisture (also, chloride ion, nitrogen
oxides, sulfur oxides, dust, etc.) may not contact the metal surface.
As one of the methods which protects the metal from rust, there is the method of covering a surface of metal with a rust preventive oil, resin coating, plating, glass coating, ceramics coating, conversion coating, etc.
Except for the method of covering the metal surface, there is a galvanic protection which always
continues giving electrons to the metal.
Effective usage of rust preventive oil
When you use rust preventive oil with garbage or dust adhering to the metal surface, sufficient rust preventive effect may not be obtained. It is also factors in which the metal chips or powder generated by forming, moisture by using water-soluble oil reduce the rust preventive effect in the scene of metal working especially. Therefore, rust preventive oil acts most effectively by using after fully removing the corrosion factor by washing metal products in pre-processing.
